The Random 10: Shalini Parfum’s Shalini

Shalini portrait July 2021You can’t fake passion.  Passion is something that comes from deep inside you and surrounds you and those you touch.  Shalini Kumar, better known as “Shalini,” is passion personified.  From her early days in Bombay, to her childhood spent in exotic locations like Seville, Dubai and Provence, her passion for fragrance developed through the scented memories of these extraordinary settings.  But while her passion to create perfume was yet to be imagined, Shalini was working on her passion for fashion; first creating for Valentino Couture and then creating her own haute couture line of clothing and jewelry aptly named Shalini Couture.

It was through happenstance that Shalini’s passion for perfume came to fruition.  In 2001, a friend’s introduction to Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel was serendipity.  The two had an immediate connection.  It was at their first meeting that they had a discussion about Shalini’s favorite flower, tuberose.  She said that she wanted a perfume that reminded her of her childhood memories of moonlit nights filled with rapturous tuberose and intoxicating orange blossom.  That meeting led to their collaboration in creating the very first Shalini perfume, simply titled “Shalini.”

Shalini Parfum Lalique Flacon

Since Shalini Parfum debuted in 2004, Shalini and Maurice’s collaboration has been a continued passion project.  In total, they have created 6 perfumes, the latest being Vanilla Rêve which takes the wearer to the tropical islands of the South Seas.  Each of Shalini’s perfumes seems to take the wearer on an olfactory journey to an exotic location that stems from those wonderful memories captured from Shalini’s childhood.

All Shalini perfumes are pure parfum in concentration, as such, they’re an extension of her haute couture fashion collection using only the finest of ingredients and are created using the principals of classical French perfumery. Thankfully for us, Shalini’s passion has graced the world with an exquisite collection of the finest perfumes.  I can only wonder where Shalini and Maurice will take us next.

So, let’s find out what else Shalini is passionate about:

  1. I am a hoarder when it comes to… owning multiple bottles of …Bordeaux!
  2.  If I could have one superpower, it would be… gardening – my personal olive grove and a vineyard.
  3. In 10 years, I see myself …living by the sea painting and writing, growing olives trees and lavender.
  4.  I am most grateful for… all the people whom I love.
  5. The most beautiful sight in the world is… a Provençal scene, any town, any street, any garden…
  6. If I had my way, I wish that perfumers/brands would…use more naturals.
  7. A guilty pleasure of mine is …reading by the Mediterranean with a glass of cold rosé under the heat of the Riviera sun.
  8. My favorite way to relax is… writing in a café in the morning with a steaming cappuccino.
  9. My favorite holiday is …by the sea, any sea.
  10. My taste in music leans towards…classical – Chopin, Debussy, Satie nocturnes…

Thanks to Shalini for sharing her passion with The Scented Hound.  You can go to the Shalini Parfum website for more information about these extraordinary perfumes:

Roja Parfums Scandal Pour Homme Parfum Cologne

WHAT I SMELL:   Scandal Pour Homme Parfum Cologne isn’t quite scandalous as it opens, but it is rather uplifting with zesty bergamot, lemon and lavender with a perfect touch of spearmint.  Instead of being infused with juice, the perfume enters with a dryness that reminds me of an application of talc.  From first spritz, Scandal is a refined masculine scent and its herbal sweetness is incredibly magnetic.  As the perfume continues to develop, the dryness begins to lessen in order to allow for the most delicate of florals to begin to grace the skin.  Here, the mix of florals, with a quiet violet and rose being most prominent, make the perfume a bit brighter and more lighthearted.  Continuing on its journey, a woody vetiver rises to take its place at the heart of the perfume.  After some time, the perfume warms with a wonderful tonka bean and becomes ever so lightly sweet and sour.  Scandal is a traditional fougère with just the right amount of “twist.”

“When a scandal hits, heads turn and secrets unravel. Everything is exposed as barriers are pushed and limits are tested. You either hide, or embrace it. A true head-turner, Scandal opens with an exciting burst of Lemon, Spearmint and Lavender, which flirts with an unusual Rhubarb note spread across a rich and sensual bed woven around the indulgent nuances of Tonka Bean. Tempted to do something which causes a scandal, it ensures you are talked about.” – Roja Dove.

Scandal Olfactory Description:  Basil, Spearmint, Lavender, and Tarragon add their pronounced aromatic freshness to a medley of Bergamot, Lemon, and Petitgrain, then given touches of sweetness from a mix of Jasmine, Violet, Rose, and Lily of the Valley, warmed by Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Casmir Wood, Cardamom, Nutmeg, and Clove, held captive by Vetiver, Patchouli, and Mosses, with an unusual note of Rhubarb, on a sensual base of Ambergris, Musk, leather-like Labdanum, and Tonka Bean.

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  Alain Delon in ‘Plein Soleil’ (Purple Noon) 1960…rakishly handsome.

THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE SCANDAL:  refined, self-assured, polished

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT SCANDAL:  CaFleureBon

BOTTOM LINE:  Roja Dove has mastered the quiet development in perfumes where the mix of ingredients unfolds in a graceful and easy way, and Scandal is no exception.  Roja Parfums has created the Parfum Cologne collection of five men’s fragrances with Scandal and Danger being the stars in my estimation, but all are fantastic in their own way.  Scandal is perfect in its modern nod to a vintage past.

Roja Parfums Elixir

WHAT I SMELL:  Elixir opens with a soft, sweet, beautiful juicy raspberry and peach.  It’s so edible and inviting and it’s an immediate spirit lifter.  A luscious rose and a brightened jasmine come sweeping in; mixing in an intoxicating way with the fruity goodness.  I always love a perfume that is full of positive energy and Elixir is the epitome of positivity.  The perfume starts to take on a layer of cottony musk which adds just the right amount of clean-like sparkle.  And soon enough, a light warmth begins to blend with the sweetened cotton which makes the perfume that much more comforting.  Not too long in the perfume’s development, Elixir begins to quiet and soften.  It’s still lightly sweet, but very demure in the most enticing way.

From the Roja Parfums website:

“Fragrance is like a magical elixir: Invisible, a single drop can transform you into a goddess. It has the power to make you feel irresistible, confident, and seductive – where anything is possible. This magical elixir exudes effortless sensuality – giving you the power to light up a room, to leave an impression, and to get what you want.” – Roja Dove.

Top Notes:  Bergamot

Heart Notes:  Lily of the Valley, Geranium, Rose de Mai, Jasmin de Grasse, Ylang Ylang, Heliotrope, Violet, Raspberry, Peach

Base Notes:  Violet Leaves, Cinnamon, Cedarwood, Casmir Wood, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Orris Sur Cèdre, Orris, Ambrette, Musk

Marilyn Monroe

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  Quietly pink.

THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE ELIXIR:  soft, inviting, sweetened

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT ELIXIR: Ms Tantrum Blog, Fashion for Lunch, fromSandyxo

BOTTOM LINE:  I have to admit that Elixir was not love at first sniff.  I thought it was pretty, but after wearing it a couple of times, I found that I was craving its quiet beauty.  Elixir borders on being a skin scent, because when you are wearing it, it feels as if it’s not projecting.   But others around me have been left wondering where the heavenly scent is coming from.  Elixir is a very personal fragrance…one that’s easy to make your own.
