New Release: Ambre Cashmere Intense by Parfums de Nicolaï

Ambre Cashmere Intense

WHAT I SMELL:  Ambre Cashmere Intense opens with a warmed citrus and a lightly crackling spice.  It’s juicy and more full-bodied than the typical light “summer” citrus opening.  There’s also a real sweetness to the citrus, as if it’s topped with a light layer of brown sugar and as it begins to develop, a creaminess comes in to provide for a semi-thickened liquid gold consistency.  Ambre Cashmere Intense is the sum of its parts rather than a series of notes like a mixed creme smoothie.  Plus, there’s a gourmand sweetness the reminds me of sugared pecans sprinkled on vanilla ice cream.  After a bit, a peppery note appears and helps to tone down the gourmand sweetness, but the buttery consistency remains intact.  After some more time, the sandalwood appears bringing with it the somewhat sharpened hairspray edge.  At this point, the perfume is very similar to one of my favorites, Guerlain Samsara.  But as soon as I say that, the sandalwood begins to meld with the patchouli and amber which reduces any and all sharp edges making this one cashmere laden gourmand perfume perfect for the fall.

From the Parfums de Nicolaï website:

The start is made by a light pepper-mandarin vibration, quickly softened by a floral iris bouquet. The ‘amber’ chord of the fragrance is sublimate by vanilla absolute, escorted by Siam benzoin and styrax resinoid.

A rich and elegant creation from which the long trail, the tenacity and the sensuality can only be irresistible.

Top Notes:  Black Pepper Essence, Essence of Mandarin, Lemon Essence

Hearth Notes:  Orris butter, Violette, Clove Nail Essense

Background Notes:  Absolute Vanilla, Labdanum absolute, Resinooid Benzoin, Tonka bean absolute, Essence of Patchouli, Sandalwood, Musk, Amber

sugared nuts and creamWHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  Sugared nuts with cream.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE AMBRE CASHMERE INTENSE:  sweetened, silky, smooth

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT AMBRE CASHMERE INTENSE:  Kafkaesque, Chemist in the Bottle, CaFleureBon

BOTTOM LINE:  The opening of Ambre Cashmere Intense was a bit too sweet for my taste, but once the perfume settles down from its initial sugared gourmand lusciousness, the real magic happens as the perfume wraps itself in a comforting creamy silky smooth sandalwood blanket of rich and lovely goodness.

Afrika-Olifant by Nishane

Afrika OlifantWHAT I SMELL:  Afrika-Olifant opens like an interesting incense and smoky mystery.  I can’t help think of a wrestler walking through clouds of smoke at a WWE event as they walk in the arena.  It’s spicy, rather sour and in your face without being heavy-handed.  However, there’s a primal male sexuality that’s powerfully overt.  The perfume screams SEX.  After a few minutes, the leather makes it way in, but as if like a stranger snuck in through the back alley, come up behind you and you feel their presence but can’t see them.  That initial rush of smoldering sex, starts to tone down after 10 minutes, but that doesn’t mean the perfume is any less provocative or subdued.  The animalic, smoky, spiced and civet laden creation smolders like burning embers.  The heat is there and if you get to close you’re going to get burned.  After 30 minutes, the musk comes to the forefront, adding another layer of pure sex.  Yes…this perfume is all about sex.  And as I try to find in my mind descriptors, I just end up back with “damn this is pure sex.”  In the end, Afrika-Olifant dries out to leave this layer of burning ash hinting at the power that came before but is now subtle, subdued, but still all that magnetic.

From the Nishane website:

Stimulates hidden desires… The fragrance opens with frankincense and myrrh. As animalic notes castoreum and civet settle down, leather and oud dominate the battlefield. Timid and audacious at the same time…

TOP NOTES:  ambergris, frankincense, myrrhe, labdanum

HEART NOTES: castoreum, civet, leather, oud

BASE NOTES:  muscenone, thibetone, muscone, civetone

Gerard Butler 300WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:   As you can see from above, this perfume is all SEX.  So many images conjure in my mind, but I’ll go for the G-rated version:  the power, the leather, and the viral men of 300!

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE AFRIKA-OLIFANT:  smoldering, sexy, primal

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT AFRIKA-OLIFANT: Fashion Lifestyle, Pierre de Nishapur

BOTTOM LINE: Afrika-Olifant is not an office scent and it’s not a fragrance for going on a picnic.  It is for wearing when you’re out on the prowl or if you want to create an aura of mystery.  In the end, the perfume leaves just enough of a trail to leave those around you wondering where that incredibly sexy smell is coming from.   This is my first introduction to the Nishane line, a niche brand from Istanbul, but it won’t be my last because they have some incredible varying perfumes in the line. Duft Bluhten, an beautiful magnolia and gardenia creation is the polar opposite of Afrika-Olifant, but equally as wonderful.  Actually, the pretty floral is probably more my style than this perfume which would be on my full bottle list if I was still single and needed to add a layer of testosterone to my Saturday night bar hopping wardrobe.

  • Bone Rating:  4 out of possible 5 bones
  • Scent:  Oriental
  • Nose: Jorge Lee
  • Classification:  Classified as unisex, but to me, this is completely masculine.
  • Expense: $230 for 50 ml parfum extrait.  Sold exclusively at Twisted Lily in the U.S.

New Release: Copal Azur by Aedes de Venustas

Copal Azur

WHAT I SMELL:  Copal Azur’s opening is wonderfully spicy, yet sparkling, like sunshine evaporating the moistness of the early day.  A salty note is mixed with a fresh pine, but the pine is not a cool weather northwest pine, but a warmer pine that feels like it’s grounded to the windswept Caribbean shore.  There’s a distinct patchouli note which is woody and light and after around 15 minutes, a creamy sweetness enters all the while an incense radiates from above.  Around the 30 minute mark, the fragrance lightens to a radiant incense with the pine, patchouli and tonka breezily anchoring the shore below.  Overall, there is a brightness about Copal Azur that’s extremely appealing.  In addition, the perfume is full of positive energy and inner warmth.  Copal Azur is a magical Mayan beauty.

From the Aedes de Venutustas website:

Mayan incense, rising from age-old temples. Lashes of sea spray and whiffs of the jungle where the jaguar lurks… Copal Azur exhales the lush, spiritual vibes of sacred Tulum.

The Muse: Copal, the Mayan incense

The vibrant hues of the Mayan Riviera filter through milky, pine-scented wreaths of burning resin.  Blue, for the Caribbean Sea and the limpid depth of the cenotes, the subterranean fresh-water pools that riddle Yucatan: a cool breeze of ozonic and salty notes.  Green, for the lush Mexican jungles: a flash of cardamom glinting in the moist, woody undergrowth of patchouli and myrrh.  White, for the purest quality of copal and the pristine beaches of Tulum: a lick of almond-scented tonka bean smoothed into creamy notes.  Amber for the Jaguar God of Terrestrial Fire – the fire that burns the sacred copal… Hypnotic, spiritual and forceful, Copal Azur might well indeed open the “Gate to Heaven”.

Tulum Mexico

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  The magic of Tulum, Mexico.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE COPAL AZUR:  positive, sun-touched, energized

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT COPAL AZUR:  Chemist in the Bottle, Colognoisseur

BOTTOM LINE:  I guess it’s fitting after just returning from the Yucatan on vacation to complete a review on a fragrance that was inspired by a Mayan incense.  What I love about this fragrance is that as an incense perfume, the incense is subtle, like it’s lightly whipping over the cliffs of Tulum (in other words, an incense perfume for those who typically aren’t incense perfume lovers).  Copal Azur is a lovely addition to the Aedes de Venutas collection of perfumes which are each unique and wonderful in very different ways.  I can’t wait to see what their next release will be!
