Intrigant Patchouli by Parfumerie Generale

WHAT I SMELL: Opens almost medicinal and like Vick’s vapor rub which then moves quickly to a civet and castoreum phase… I am hoping to God that this gets better.  Finally, this moves to a honeyed ambered patchouli that is not too sweet, but not my cup of tea.  How come this reminds me of Tauer’s Orange Star?  Both have patchouli in them but not other similar notes but somehow the combination just hits me wrong in the worst possible way. I could go on with descriptors but I think you already got my point:  I don’t like it!

Intrigant Patchouli Notes:  ginger, animal patchouli, Mysore’s Sandal Wood, Benzoin, Amber and Musk.

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  What I envision Courtney Love early 90’s to smell like; dirty and grungy and trying to smell like a 60’s hippie (don’t get me wrong, I love Courtney Love and Hole big time, I just don’t want to smell like her).

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE INTRIGANT PATCHOULI:  scrubbable, strong, wrong

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT INTRIGANT PATCHOULI:  Fragrance Bouquet, Smellythoughts, Pour Monsieur

BOTTOM LINE: I am finding that I do like patchouli as a note.  However, this takes patchouli down the wrong path for me.  Uggghhh, I need to go wash this off now as it’s making my stomach turn.

Anima Dulcis by Arquiste

WHAT I SMELL: I was worried as I applied this and my better half said that I smelled like a cup of Starbuck’s Caramel Machiatto.  I guess that’s as good as a description as any as Anima Dulcis goes on strong and sweet…very sweet.  It’s sharp vanilla and thick chocolate goodness surrounded by smoky light incense.  I didn’t see this as going in the right direction, but as time goes on and as it dries down Anima Dulcis hugs close to the skin, it’s spiced cinnamon vanilla infused cocoa is ever so slightly sweet and very comfortable.  The overpowering sweetness at the beginning, makes way for a light and pleasant layer that seems to sit a millimeter off of your skin.

Anima Dulcis Notes:  Cocoa Absolute, Mexican Vanilla, Cinnamon, Chili Infusion

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  What a great coffee/chocolate store in the old world was like as you could smell the wonderful foods mixed with the old smell of the building with wide planked wood floors and the rich sweet tobaccos smells that that were wafting in from the crowded streets in town.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE ANIMA DULCIS: old world, gourmand, aged

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT ANIMA DULCIS: Bois de Jasmin, Australian Perfume Junkies, Now Smell This

BOTTOM LINE:  I do have a bit of a hard time with the initial phase of this fragrance and how it’s just so sweet at the beginning.  But after 30 minutes or so, Anima Dulcis really does become a beautiful fragrance and one that might end up on my FB list as it’s so different from anything else that I own and may be my perfect new cold weather companion.

Tom Ford x 2: Tobacco Vanille and Noir

TOM FORD PRIVATE BLEND TOBACCO VANILLE

WHAT I SMELL:  Tobacco Vanille opens with rich creamy tobacco and spice, with what I find to be almost a slightly nutty honeyed apple clove like layer, but you have to get near the skin to find that effect.  This scent stays pretty linear to me although it sweetens after a bit and then becomes more woody as the drydown continues.  Tobacco Vanille opens as time goes on and becomes more robust.  Don’t let the quiet opening fool you and keep spritzing, because in no time you’ll feel the full effects of the fragrance.

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  The reason I wanted to test this is because I heard that it was similar to A*Men Pure Havane.  Sure, there is a similarity with some of the notes, but I think they’re very different.  Pure Havane is a party in Cuba; it’s fun and it’s festive and raw.  This to me is very much a 1980s fragrance, sophisticated, big and maybe a bit dated.  I find this very nostalgic.

Tobacco Vanille Notes:  top notes are tobacco leaf and spicy notes; middle notes are tonka bean, tabacco blossom, vanilla and cacao; base notes are dried fruits and woody notes

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE TOBACCO VANILLE:  mature, sophisticated, powered

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT TOBACCO VANILLE: Olfactoria’s Travels, Notable Scents, Scentrist.com

BOTTOM LINE: The first time I wore this, I liked it better than the 2nd time I wore it which made me feel a bit like I was walking around with a “Yankee Candle Company” candle hanging from my neck.  For those of you not in the US, that’s not a good thing.

TOM FORD NOIR

WHAT I SMELL: Noir opens to a fresh and clean bergamot opening.  It’s zesty and peppery and not what I would have expected with the name, Noir.  Very quickly this becomes a bit warmer, but not enough to make this less zesty.  There are many notes to this fragrance which I am having difficulties distinguishing as they’re blended together well.

Noir notes:  top notes are bergamot, verbena, caraway, pink pepper and violet; middle notes are black pepper, nutmeg, tuscan iris, geranium, bulgarian rose and clary sage; base notes are opoponax, amber, indonesian patchouli leaf, vetiver, civet and vanilla

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME: Fragrance that is indistinguishable from many other colognes.  With the name Noir, I want mystery and adventure… this has neither.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE NOIR:  zesty, familiar, predictable

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT NOIR: Scentrist.com, The Black Narcissus, The Grooming Guru

BOTTOM LINE: Nice and pleasant, but rather unexciting.  I’ll pass.
