Ricardo Ramos – SacroMonte

WHAT I SMELL:  SacroMonte opens brightly with sunny grass tinged with basil.  It’s very comforting in a familiar way; its as if you just finished mowing your lawn when your yard smells so green, clean, fresh and tailored.  Soon, a very light note of fig leaf helps to lift the perfume from the ground up towards the sky.   And shortly after, a soapy jasmine enters where it sits nicely above the grass along with a light spice.  The perfume at this point begins to dry and the grass moves more towards a hay that has been sitting in the sun.  But as soon as I say that the perfume turns more towards the green, but this time with the help of lily of the valley.  SacroMonte is really beautiful at this juncture.  I find it to be incredibly approachable and interestingly pretty in a very unisex way.  In the end, SacroMonte settles into a sweetened ambered musk which is lovely, but not nearly as interesting as the perfume was along the journey.  Nonetheless, SacroMonte is an easy to love perfume.

Notes from the Ricardo Ramos website:

Legend has it that the treasures of the expelled Nasrid nobility were hidden in the mountains where today is the idyllic and picturesque Granada’s neighborhood. SacroMonte is a vital fragrance which transports us to a natural environment with a dry and fruity effect of freshness.

Top notes: Freshly cut grass, fig leaf, basil; Heart notes: Lily of the valley, jasmine, plum, fig; Background: White musk, dry amber, hay.

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  Sunshine summertime.

Vilhelm Parfumerie – Basilico & Fellini

WHAT I SMELL:  Basilico & Fellini opens with a warmed, sparkling and zesty dragon fruit that is incredibly uplifting in its tanginess and its freshness.  The basil comes in quickly to add this great mix of herbal goodness to the tangy fruit.  It’s gourmand, but from the garden with the fruit and herb.  After a bit, the dragon fruit begins to make way for a soft violet mixed with a fuzzy fig.  There’s so much freshness going on here that is so refreshing, delightful and positive in its energy.  All the notes within this concoction seem to take turns coming to the surface, from fruit to herb to flower as if they’re involved with a whirling and twirling dance of happiness.  This dance continues for quite some time, but it finally slows down to quietly end with a warm and comforting fig infused hay.  Basilico & Fellini is a delight of a perfume that’s perfect for warmer weather as well as those winter days when you want to be transported back to the sun-filled splendor of the garden.

From the Vilhelm Parfumerie website:

The unmistakable smell of risotto bianco and a minty, peppery kick as the ultra fresh basil warms on the dish. A bon vivant who wanted to show life in all its glorious reality – people eating, sleeping and making love – Federico Fellini was said to request extra servings of this herb, rumored to be an aphrodisiac.

Top:  Dragon Fruit, Basil
Middle : Violet, Wild Fig
Base : Vetiver, Green Hay

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  Fig and basil garden goodness.  So much so that I thought I would include a recipe for a delicious fresh salad.

Fresh Fig Salad with Basil, Goat Cheese, and Arugula

Fig season is short and sweet, so make the most of it with this fresh fig salad with basil, goat cheese, and pomegranate vinaigrette.  Yields 4 servings.

Ingredients:
  • 1 shallot, minced
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 4 tsp pomegranate molasses
  • salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 6 tbsp olive oil
  • 5 oz arugula
  • ¾ cup basil leaves
  • 8 ripe figs, room temperature
  • 4 oz goat cheese, crumbled
Instructions:
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the shallot, mustard, and pomegranate molasses. Add some salt and black pepper to season and then whisk in the olive oil.
  2. Add the arugula and basil to the bowl and toss to combine. Divide among serving plates.
  3. Quarter the figs and arrange over the salad. Top with goat cheese crumbles and serve immediately.

New Release: D.S. & Durga Debaser

DSD_DEBASER_BOTTLE_grandeWHAT I SMELL:  Debaser opens with a luscious pear that is all too quickly replaced with a very milky and creamy fig over a crisp green note.  The bergamot gives it a semi sparkling radiance, but that too moves quickly to the side to make way for a woody note that seems to strip the green out of the fragrance only to have it replaced with a drier more hefty wood.  Thankfully, the fig does a nice job to help maintain the fragrance from airing completely out .  There’s a real comfort here in that as big as the perfume is (trust me it radiates), there is nothing here that goes over the top nor does the fig and coconut become suffocating.  After around 15 minutes, the tonka comes to the forefront and there is a rather incensed and smoky edge that helps to continue drying out the perfume.  There’s also a bit of a petroleum aspect that seems to reveal itself which adds this unexpected but welcomed dimension which takes Debaser from really nice to really sexy.   In the end you’re left with a really lovely mossy and woody concoction that is nicely accentuated with a lightly sugared fig.  Just note however that a little goes a long way.   I can’t wait to test this in the heat of the summer as it will likely bloom and really project from the heat making it all that more sexy!

Notes from the D.S. & Durga website:

Top notes:  bergamot, green leaf, pear stem

Heart notes:  fig, coconut milk, iris

Base notes:  blond woods, tonka bean, moss

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME: What I believe the dashing Mutiny on the Bounty Fletcher Christian would smell like. Any of the movie versions will do.  Who’s your pick?  Clark Gable, Marlon Brando or Mel Gibson?

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE DEBASER:  beefy, sexy, bold

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT DEBASER:  Colognoisseur

BOTTOM LINE: Debaser is based on the Pixie’s song of the same name inspired by the Luis Buneul and Salvador Dali surrealist film, Un Chien Andalou.  To me this obscure and artful inspired perfume bypassed surreal and went to outright sexy to me.  Hmmmm, surreal sexiness…have I just tapped into something?
