New Release: Mugler Angel Muse

WHAT I SMELL: Angel Muse goes on the skin all sweet, nutty and über creamy; it lies on your skin as if was applied like butter to toast. The perfume is sweet, but not sugary; instead it’s more gourmand. As the perfume develops, that creamy nutty buttery concoction moves to the less creamy, but the projection begins to grow and with it the patchouli comes front and center with a pulsating rhythm of brown sugar and vetiver which helps to keep the perfume from going full on sweet. As it continues to develop, a tonka and vanilla note comes forward which helps to give the perfume some needed depth. In the end, the perfume resides in a warmed cocoon of semi sweet-comfort and ultimately after many hours, Angel Muse ends up feeling like a comfy musky vanilla pillow. But best of all Angel Muse is a bright and happy scent and that’s sure to make you smile.

BOTTOM LINE: There’s something very nostalgic and comforting about Angel Muse. Like a throwback in time, the perfume is big and bold and fits like a well-worn sweatshirt or sweater.

Thierry Mugler Alien

Just digging through what seems to be the hundreds of untouched samples. This is the first thing I grabbed…

WHAT I SMELL: Alien opens with a cashmere woody musk and cotton candy sweetened jasmine. It’s slightly fuzzy and kind of sticky and it feels as if it’s sitting on a layer of gauze. Very quickly I want it to tone down its sugar as the opening is just too sweet and in your face. After around 10 minutes, the fragrance still remains sweet, but the perfume loses some of the candied aspect, but what I get most of all of this clean musk dryer sheet. Is is bad? No, but it’s not great either. Does it morph much past this? Unfortunately not, there’s just lots of jasmine and woody musk. The only thing that seems to be alien about the fragrance is that it’s taking over my body. A couple of spritzes and it keeps growing and growing; enough to cake the back of my throat and burn my eyes. Help!

BOTTOM LINE: I am not the target market for Alien which harkens back to the perfumes of the 1980s where young girls would blot the local mall landscape with big hair and big perfumes. I don’t think that mall rats still exist in today’s culture, but if you’re wearing this there will be no mistaking your coming or going. As we used to say in the 80s, “just say NO.”

A*Men Pure Havane by Thierry Mugler

The wonderful Undina and I swapped some samples a while back and I am slowly making my way through each and every one. It’s been a real treat. Today’s sampling was a very nice surprise!

WHAT I SMELL: A*Men Pure Havane opens with a wonderful sweet tobacco ladened honey. It’s warm and delicious and oh so edible; you just want to lick it off of your skin. This could easily have gone over the top, but it doesn’t as the labdanum and amber mixed with the vanilla and cocoa leaves this scent grounded. It’s so full bodied, gourmand and wonderfully unique and bold. Once this scent takes off, it remains in this state of sweetened warmth. You just can’t help but to continually sniff your wrist while wearing this. Thankfully A*Men Pure Havane also has wonderful sillage and longevity. Goody!

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME: Cuba 1955. I can picture a open aired bar with rotating celing fans to drive away the heat, a Mojito, a white suit, and a large cigar.

BOTTOM LINE: This flanker is a limited edition, but can still be purchased on the Thierry Mugler website for a very reasonable $88 for 100ml bottle. I may just be doing that. Although I keep reading that this is similar to Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille so you might just see me at Nordstrom’s checking that out this weekend. However, I don’t think I can get Tom Ford for $88! Thanks Undina, I am loving this!
