WHAT I SMELL: Yowsa…so musky, so lusty and so full of sweet delicious honey…Chinchilla’s introduction is amazing.  At its core, the perfume’s opening is set with a delicious honeyed floral civet that’s lightly waxy and full on scintillating.  And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the perfume becomes a bit thicker as it feels like a light honey is being dripped over the burgeoning florals.  In a short while, what started off as pure sex, begins to move to the more sensual.  The animalic notes are still there, but they begin to tone down and tame.  I’m not going to try to pick apart any notes because they are so seamlessly blended, but I do notice just a hint of cinnamon peppering the honeyed florals.    In the end, Chinchilla lightens to a wonderfully soft semi sweet honeyed floral that leaves a perfect trail of come-hither behind you as you wear it.  Chinchilla is a stunningly sexy and sensual perfume.

From the DSH Perfumes website:

A ‘retro nouveau’  floriental/honey musk animalic  fragrance.  It’s gorgeously sexy, and yet so very cozy and comforting.

Chinchilla notes include hyrax, ambrette (musk mallow), bergamot, vetiver, oakmoss, carnation, castoreum, rose de mai, cinnamon, civet, beeswax, gardenia, honey, musk, nard himalayan (jatamansi), tonka bean and white pepper.

THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE CHINCHILLA: alluring, tempting, magnetic

BOTTOM LINE:  Chinchilla is a beautifully smooth seductress.  It has just the right amount of animalic elements without being over the top; which means it whispers it’s seduction rather than screams it.  The other plus is that Chinchilla could easily be worn by a man or a woman, being easily captivating on both.

  1. This sounds like it could possibly be skanky. The ambrette seed gives me pause because its treatment in Chanel No. 18 makes it smell like unwashed body. That said, the next time I feel like navigating the DSH website, I will include a sample of this.

  2. Wow this sounds kind of amazing. I think this perfumer has an innate ability to blend perfumes harmoniously yet get a soulful, buzzing synergy from them as well. It is difficult to pull honey off I think, but this sounds really good. PLUS, I love the name chinchilla. Cute, furry. But I read the other day that they are among the most murderous animals on the planet, killing their own kind more than practically any other creatures. Does this perfume have a secret bite?

  3. Ooh! This sounds like a must-try for me!
But wait, Steve. Could you not find a pic of a chinchilla in a negligee? Are your standards slipping? 😀

  4. Heya Hound,
Dawn is so good at creating fragrances that speak to me.
Love the way you’ve described Chinchilla, isn’t it fun? I keep imagining some top-flight male exec wearing it to work and leaving a steaming trail of broken hearts in his wake every day.

  5. I had a chinchilla when I was younger and he most certainly didn’t smell like your description of this perfume. Mom made me get rid of him because he got sand everywhere and he wood floors were paying the price.

  6. Honey almost never plays nice on my skin so I don’t think this perfume will work for me (they can’t all, can they?) but I’m glad to read that Dawn has created yet another great perfume. Great review!

  7. I liked this one too. It seems it played out on your skin much as it did on mine…a kitty cat rather than a tiger. I also thought the honey note was very well done. Thanks for the mention of my post at the end, by the way. Very kind of you. 🙂

  10. Hilarious. I just tried this out. It reminded me of my mother’s box of herbs and essential oils for making lip balm, our flower garden, and honey. Roses, alkanet, dust, potpourri. For me, this perfume taps into the essential motherhood of my mother: knowledge and doing and nurturing, and teaching and playing with us. It reminds me of being young.

This scent was just comforting and odd to me, as it is nothing I would want to wear, since it reminds me of my mother. Not animalic at all! I would sort of like a tiny bottle to smell in when my mom dies (morbid, yes) 😦 so that I can conjure her up.

Perpetually interesting, our different scent associations.

    • Wow…you’re mother sounds so very earthy…my motherhood smells would remind me of Pine-Sol and various floor cleaners! 🙂

      • I never thought of it like that, but I guess maybe. She cooked a lot and loved/s the smell of China Rain. Fussing with herbs and now she keeps bees. The floors got swept and vacuumed regularly, but not washed super often, very funny as I think about that fact! Murphy’s Oil Soap once in a very great while. She always liked nice-smelling things. I just got her an Olfactif subscription for Christmas and she loves it. 🙂
