New Release: Gardenia by Robert Piguet

WHAT I SMELL:  Gardenia opens with a mix of heady florals with thick and rich rather brown sugared ylang-ylang.  This is everything I love in a floral, so deep and rich that when you draw the scent in, it coats the back of your throat.    The florals are low to the ground and feel weighted as if the flowers crushed under your feet.  An earthy raw dirt component adds a realness that makes the perfume even more inviting.  After around 15 minutes there are peaks of a lighter flower that start to come through as if they are able to make their way through the crushed dirt.  The florals are lighter, but no less intoxicating as they’re mixed with a delicious and exuberant vanilla.  The fragrance seems to experience a rebirth with this 2nd wave of florals which bursts out with golden energy.  But Gardenia manages to contain itself as the burst levels to more of a golden warm haze.  The fragrance is now feminine, seductive and alluring.  It calls you in and you can’t let go of its beauty.  After an hour, there’s a slight woody greenish quality that makes it way in making it less feminine, but more unisex.  In the end, you’re left with a subtle warm gardenia fragrance that is creamy,  comforting, classic and incredibly peaceful in its beauty.

From Robert Piguet Parfums:

Soft, flowery Ylang Ylang embraces the sweet and bold fleur de lis for a bold, sparkling beginning. The sensuous white gardenia scintillates the heart as it grows richer and more complex with black leather, Madagascar Vanilla, and cashmeran warming to a sultry base.

gay-weddingWHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  The perfect gay wedding fragrance; floral and handsome without being too feminine.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE GARDENIA:  embracing, divine, magnificent

BOTTOM LINE:  I don’t really get any gardenia from the perfume until the fragrance begins to work its way into the drydown.  But throughout the fragrance’s development, the florals are intoxicating, beautiful and just the right cup of tea for this lover of white floral fragrances.  Gardenia softens to a whisper and some might want it to project a bit more, but to me, it radiates perfectly as a glowing floral forcefield.

  1. Excellent call Scented Hound. Gardenia would be spectacular as a Gay Wedding fragrance. One day we will have equality here in Australia too.
Gardenia may even work for everyone elses weddings too. What a magnificent fragrance to waft down the aisle then calming to snuggle mode later in the evening.
    Lovely review.
Thanks for the Link Love too.

    • My dear Portia – I hope some day you’ll be able to make it official in Australia too. I never thought I would see the day when I would happen here, but the time has come and it’s wonderful. And I wish that I could have worn this on my special day…but there’ll be many special days when I still can. So I hear there is a rumor that you’re gracing the shores of the U.S. soon?

  2. I don’t have much luck with Robert Piguet’s fragrances but I’ll try this one when I get a chance because 1) I’m always curious about your 4-bones and up rated perfumes and 2) I like gardenia perfumes (probably even more than I like gardenia flower).

    • U – I need to try more of their perfumes. So far this and Bandit work well for me. The only other fragrance in the line that I have tried is the infamous Fracas, but that was a bit too much tuberose for me. I have the feeling there are others there that are going to be to my liking. BTW, I would have given this a 4.5, but left it at 4 because it really is low in it’s projection, although I woke up this morning and it still lingered ever so quietly.

  3. This sounds really beautiful. Like Undina I don’t seem to get along very well with any other Piguet scents but I will try this one for sure.

  4. I liked this when I tried it at Sniffa. I almost bought it and probably would have if the gift with purchase wasn’t Fracas. I’ve already got plenty of that one. It seems a stretch to call this gardenia because I get a lot more from it than that. Good call on the wedding perfume. It would work for any wedding I think especially if someone isn’t into the fruity. girly girl stuff.

    • You’re right, it’s not “gardenia” as much as a wonderful white floral. To be honest, on paper at Sniffa I rather dismissed it…but on my skin, it really came to life. How come Sniffa already feels like a lifetime ago??!

      • I don’t know but it does seem so long ago. It went by way too fast.
It’s hard to judge some things at Sniffa with all the competing scents floating around.

  5. This sounds absolutely gorgeous. I love gardenia perfume so this is a must try one for me. “Handsome without being too feminine”, this is one of the qualities I was looking for with the floral fragrance.

  6. Love ylang ylang and vanilla and any attempt at replicating gardenia, so would try this like a shot if I see it. Even if it isn’t awfully like gardenia, I am sure I would enjoy it regardless. Thanks for the heads up!

    • I realize it’s hard to recreate Gardenia, Magnolia and the like and therefore I, like you, am not expecting the “real” experience. But if it’s closely done while being a fantastic white floral, then I’m in for sure!
