Songes by Annick Goutal

Do you have any of those fragrances that seem to call your name like a siren song?  For me it was Songes…as much as I tried to stay away I just couldn’t!  So let’s see if the song matches the lure…

WHAT I SMELL:  Songes opens medicinal and deeply antiseptic only to quickly move to this indolic jasmine that smells rather like sweet bubblegum without being too sugary.  The fragrance is big and wrapped in a waxy shell.  In just a few minutes, the scent just blasts off the skin like a floral explosion.  At this point it weaves a spell on you like a big floral feminine venus fly trap that overtakes you like an unsuspecting victim.  The lush and heavy fragrance is almost too much to take so I caution that when spraying it on use sparingly!  In addition to the bubblegum, there’s just a hint of spice which controls the sweet without overtaking it.  After around the 30 minute mark Songes become more creamy rather than waxy and the Frangipani takes over to the forefront.  Frangipani is not one of my favorite flowers, but the Tiare helps to compliment the Frangipani to give Songes a tropical feel.  This is phase two and there is nothing subtle about the transition; Songes becomes full on South Seas.  As more time passes, the fragrance becomes a bit deeper and when smelled it coats the back of your throat with its thickness.  After about an hour or so, Songes moves into its third phase and retreats down to a dry and woody shell covered in with a light Frangipani.  And after a few hours, Songes plays peek-a-boo as it sometimes seems to disappear, only to reveal itself again.

From the Annick Goutal website:

Olfactory Family :Intense Floral (Spicy) – (Frangipani flower, Tiare flower, Sambac Jasmine absolute, Ylang-Ylang absolute, Benjoin, Bourbon Vanilla absolute, Patchouli, Spices – Cinnamon, Cumin, Black Pepper)

frangipani and moonWHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:   Like a tropical breeze brushing up against the white flowers releasing their intoxicating beauty beneath the full moon.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE SONGES:  beastly, beauty, big

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT SONGES:  I Smell Therefore I Am, Confessions of a Perfume Nerd, Olfactoria’s Travels

BOTTOM LINE: Wow, what a ride.  Big, bold and like a slap across the face with a floral assault only to be left with this woody like shell of its former self.  In other words, the siren song that had been calling me, entrapped me with false beauty.  I kind of like it, I kind of don’t.  It’s kind of big, it’s kind of not.  In other words, Songes can keep calling, I just don’t know if I’ll answer again.

  1. I agree with you on this one. Not what I was expecting and while I didn’t hate it, I wasn’t as smitten by it as a lot of people seem to be. I think I’ve read so many glowing comments about it that I was expecting something really mind blowing. I love my big white florals but this one didn’t work on me.

    • My dear Poodle –

All I have done is read rave review on this, but then when I publish this article the feedback I am receiving on Facebook and here is that many like, but many don’t. Like you, I love my big white florals. I’m going to put this aside and give it a try again a bit later.

  2. All this incense, frangipani and creamy really do have your name written all over it! Glad you found a new love. I’m not a huge fan of this particular AG scent though.

  4. I really wanted to love it, but the punch in the nose was overwhelming. I got samples of Alien Essence Absolue (nice lasting power) and Abdes Salaam Attar Tawaf ( zero lasting power). I’m in love with them for reasons that I wanted to love Songes, but didn’t. Both are creamy amber laced white flowers that don’t overwhelm in 90 degree heat.

  5. Oh… So you didn’t like this one? Songes can be a bit overwhelming especially in the edp concentration. In my experience the edp was very heavy, heady and indolic. Very narcotic white florals of to are flower, jasmine and fraganini. Puts you in a Paradise state of mind! The edt was much more tolerable to me. It hasn’t as heady and the woody base was great to balance out the toned down white florals. Just enough to let me know they’re still there but not slap me in the face. Have you tried the edt concentration of Songes?

  6. This is one of the few Annick Goutals that I like, and one reason is that it’s not as thin, wispy, demure and light as the rest from the line. Even then, it’s hardly bold or a powerhouse by my standards, but it’s better than many of the rest. (Annick Goutal’s aesthetic is not really my cup of tea.) Still, the lasting power on my skin is… not great.

    • To be honest, I haven’t been “siren songed” by any of the other Goutals as they do seem to be aimed at a very womanly audience. I’m not surprised that they haven’t lived long on your skin as this powerhouse faded incredibly quickly which was incredibly bizarre.

  7. I tried this early in my perfume hobby, terrified myself, got a banging headache, and gave it a wide berth for about 5 years. At a recent meeting of the Perfume Lovers London group, Neil Chapman brought a bottle along as an example of a vanilla scent. I can’t truly say I got much vanilla, but I think I was ready to sniff this perfume and its big boots again, and rather enjoyed it, albeit at the safe distance of card.

    • Neil is the one who made this the ultimate siren song for me with his review when he included this in the “best of Jasmine” posting. His description and love for it put it at the top of my “must try” list.

  8. Ha, that’s weird… I left comment a few days ago but it got swallowed into the black hole of the virtual sphere… I like Songes but only in small doses. I’m a floral girl so I thought I would fall head over heels in love with this but not as much as I expected. Some days I love this, but some other days I can’t stand it… Strange.

    • You sound like me. I thought for sure this would be “the one”…but like you it didn’t strike the right chord. In terms of loving a fragrance one day and not the next, I have tons of those which I shall not name…ok, for me my main is Iskander!

  9. Songes is not for me either but Daisy needs to come out to play to let you know how SHE really feels about this 🙂

    • True, true, my dear! Normally, I leave the white florals to my mother. That being said, I fell hook, line, and sinker for Songes and it has been on heavy rotation for the past few weeks. Smells like glorious vacation. Smells like sinking into a soft cloud of jasmine smeared with overripe bananas. Smells like I just cleared out the room because as Hajusuuri knows, 12 sprays is kind of my minimum number 🙂

It has also become one of my most complimented fragrances recently . . . probably because my scent radius is enormous!

  10. I liked getting your take on this. I don’t feel I’ve ever understood this perfume, or what the fuss is about. It’s always enlightening to read other people’s thoughts (good and bad), since I’m apparently not destined to have a Songes epiphany!

    • Here I thought that it was all love for Songes and I had never heard anything but incredible positives about it. But there seems to be a contingent of those who don’t quite get it. So Nat, you’re in good company 🙂
