A New Look and a Bit of a Backstory

Dickie

Dickie at the Carter Center.

I tend to get bored easily.  And looking at the same website month after month gets me a bit itchy, so I decided take a stab at a new look.  I know that the hound picture was maybe a bit iconic and it has served me well and may some day be back, but I wanted to make the site a bit more modern and more personal.   So my new header contains a picture of the original hound in my life Dickie.  Dickie was my first born.  He was found by a friend wandering by himself in the Georgia countryside and was about as big as my hand.  Instead of going to the pound, he ended up at our house.  Dickie was incredibly smart, suffered greatly from separation anxiety and was considered “The Peace Beagle” as we called that him because he hated any kind of conflict or shouting and would insert himself between us when we had an argument.  We even had Dickie and Daddy time which usually consisted of just the two of us on Saturday morning going to the Mrs. Winners restaurant and getting chicken biscuits.  He loved going with me on that ride.  The other thing he loved more than anything else was swimming.  When we lived in Midtown Atlanta, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library was the unofficial dog park as it had a wonderful field with a pond.  He could swim for hours.  As he was the original Scented Hound,  it was also at the Carter Center where he managed to roll around on numerous dead animals as well as human poop from the neighborhood homeless men.  That was big fun.

The other dog in the picture is Laika who was Dickie’s younger sister (not by birth).  She was two years younger and looked just like him when we brought her home as a pup.  We thought “how wonderful, two of the same sweet dogs”.  I sympathize with parents who have varying personalities in children because Laika was a stinker from the time we brought her home.  She turned out to be 1/3 the size of Dickie, but ruled the house from minute one.  She would get into trouble, run away from home, nip at Dickie if he was having fun; in other words she was pretty much a pain in the ass.  But she could be sweet when she wanted to be and she too was my baby.

In any case, I have a soft spot in my heart for hounds and when I decided to create this blog “The Scented Hound” was an easy fit.  Both Dickie and Laika are long gone, but their memories live on in my heart and now they do also on my site.

  1. Awww….babies! I love hearing dog stories. Funny how the girls just come in and take over isn’t it? My girl is such a fussy diva b*tch now it’s driving me nuts. Stanley is our peace poodle. If hubband gets upset and drops an f-bomb he does not like it at all. Usually it’s said due to the Bruins, Patriots, or Red Sox games so Stan will strategically place himself between hubband and the offending tv screen. I think he thinks he’s protecting him but when you want to see the puck drop during a playoff game and all you see is a big fluffy poodle head….well, you know. Loved the stories. You need another dog.
I was playing with some samples of your last night. I’ve determined that I like the Ambra e Iris because you’re right, there’s not much iris there. It is a patch bomb. It makes me smell like a sexy basement or something like that.
    Hugs.

  2. Thank you for sharing your lovely stories about your dog-son and dog-daughter Steve!
As you said, the new header is your perfume collection. I have Roja Dove there? Wow!
And that black tube right next to Kilian reminds me of Ramon Monegal packaging – is it one of his perfumes?

I’ve been thinking about changing a theme for Chemist in the Bottle but I’m not sure if that would work. Of course logo would have to remain the same since people recognize me by that header and by the name itself. We’ll see. Maybe one day I will change the design theme for posts, leaving the logo as it is 😉

    • The Roja (Enslaved) was a Christmas present from the hub. He actually bought it through Osswald and got Roja to sign it for him. 🙂 the black tube is the top of my FM Portrait of a Lady. Yeah, I struggled with changing the look… I think I just need to get used to it. But I like being to look at my kids pic all of the time 🙂

      • A very impressive Christmas present. And so much more valuable with Dove’s signature. My bottle of Monegal Ambra di Luna was also autographed.
That’s a big cap for POAL.
You’ll get used to it shortly and your babies are with you there 🙂

  3. I love the new look and enjoyed your stories about your furry friends. I have pics of all the cats I’ve been lucky enough to have in my life – from when I was a child to now. We only have the one now though – Inky (or LBB – Lil Black Bugger as he’s affectionately known) as his sister Willow went across the Rainbow Bridge a few months ago. I miss her dearly as does he. What is it with dogs and rolling in unmentionable stuff? I’m glad you kept your wee gravatar 🙂

    • Thanks Sallly…as much as I loved my pups, I have some and have had some very special kitties too. My boy Duncan is a nice bridge between a cat and a dog. He’s 19 pounds, thinks he’s a dog, but loves to sit in boxes like a cat. Sorry to here about Willow. I’m sure you provided her an incredible life 🙂

  4. Love the backstory. I love the Jimmy Carter Library. We have three cats, but I’ve always been a dog person.

    • Katherine – I like to think that I’m an “animal” person. I love both cats and dogs, but I have to admit that cats are a bit easier to take care of. The thought of walking a dog out in the rain and cold makes me want to hold off on getting a dog again until I move to a warmer climate.

  6. I love the new look and the header but I’m also glad that you kept your hound gravatar. 🙂
I absolutely loved hearing the stories of your tail wagging kids. It’s been such a long time since I had my own. But for now, I have to satisfy my furry cravings with my friends’. 🙂

  7. I’m joining the comments very late, but I too love the new look! It’s good to change it up every once and a while. By the way, this is the best sentence that I have read in a long while: “As he was the original Scented Hound, it was also at the Carter Center where he managed to roll around on numerous dead animals as well as human poop from the neighborhood homeless men. That was big fun.” Literally LOL!

Ps. I also haven’t heard the term “dingleberry” in a long time 😉
