NEW YORK MUSK by BOND NO. 9

new-york-muskLet me first say that I have avoided Bond No. 9 fragrances.  I don’t know what it is, the plastic looking bottles with garish and bright colors? Or could it be that they seem to be like rabbits wherein they breed and multiply as quickly as you can turn your head.  In any case, I really have had no desire to check them out.  But as it would happen, a lovely friend sent me a nice size sample of New York Musk, so of course I had to check it out.

WHAT I SMELL:  New York Musk opens with juicy black currant tinged with a slight citrus.  It’s not quite edible, but extremely pleasant, yet seems somehow manufactured, like a smell that is part wood and part plastic like the inside of a shipping container…no, it smells a bit like a new outdoor jute rug…no, kind of like the inside a tweed coat.  Whatever the case, it didn’t last all that long.  I was expecting the opening to be overwhelming, but instead it’s relatively subdued.  After a few minutes the patchouli really starts to flourish along with a hint of cocoa.  At this point, New York Musk is nice and soothing.   After around the ten minute mark, the fragrance starts to build in projection and the patchouli boldly takes center stage.  The vetiver woodiness keeps the patchouli in line, not allowing it to completely explode.  What I like is that there is a just a hint of nutty sugar that sits on top that makes it slightly gourmand. However, I do think to myself that if it stays in this state wearing it could tire me out.  But after around an hour, the gourmandish patchouli makes way for the linen like musk which tends to flatten the overall fragrance, and also gives a slight wet and dirty tube sock finish.  Unfortunately, in the end you’re left with a pretty pungent sour musk.

New York Musk Notes: grapefruit, black currant, osmanthus flower, green lilies, nutmeg, musk, patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver

wigWHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  A wig.  Why?  Because this sits on top of your skin, it’s pleasant, adds some dimension, and like the right wig, it adds a nice finish to your ensemble.  But then a wig can also sit on your head slightly askew and that means it’s just not quite right.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE NEW YORK MUSK:  dichotomous, innocuous, semi-sugared

BOTTOM LINE:  I can’t really figure out what’s going on here.  I like part of it, don’t mind some of it, and am left scratching my head with the dull dirty sock like finish.  In other words, I’m not running to the Bond No. 9 counter any time soon to check out more of the line.

  1. I’m with you about not liking Bond No 9 as a brand. Their fragrances literally reproduce like rabbits plus I find these packages rather tacky and what I hate the most is the attitute of this brand. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the case but once in the past Bond submitted a lawsuit to the court accusing the other small niche artisanal brand of using the name of NYC street in their new perfume, which was also used by Bond!

    • I don’t think we’re the target market here. I’m not sure who is as they are pretty expensive. But obviously is a market out there for them!

      • A lot of people like them (just look at perfume groups at Facebook) but in my case (yours too) a bling os Swarovsky crystals on the bottle doesn’t appeal to me.

I prefer a more simple packaging when I know that most of the money I spent on my purchase went to produce a great perfume juice.

  2. Not one of my favorite Bonds, but there are really some good ones if you look just a little bit. I’d be happy to steer you in the right direction

  3. Thanks so much for giving me a chuckle! I’ll be snickering about this for quite a while, I’m sure. A wig, slightly askew. Perfect!

I’ve just never been interested in this brand and have not sniffed a single one. This one definitely would not be the one to make a good first impression.

  5. I didn’t like this one either. To me it was loud, fruity floral on a backdrop of soapy clean musk. I wish they would have taken the musk in a dirtier direction; would’ve been more interesting.

  6. For one reason or another I was convinced the brand had something unique to offer. I ordered a sample of Union Square, and to me, it came off verryyy similar to this CVS brand sunflower hand cream I had a tube of. I don’t want to discard the brand because of that one experience but it left me a little bit discouraged.

  7. Daisy and I did a drive by of the tinier than tiny garish Bond No. 9 boutique on Washington St. in the Meatpacking district. The SA was nice enough and we must have sniffed a record 10 perfumes in 3 minutes. I like the original Silver Factory (I have a decant). I may yet find “my” Bond No. 9 but there are others ahead of the line (e.g. I do not yet have a FB Amouage).

    • I have never been in one of their stores. I imagine they are big and bright and rather like that candy store that Ralph Laurent’s daughter used to have across from Bryant Park. Am I pretty close?

      • No, this is a satellite, smaller than small and probably smaller than the smallest walk-in closet in the Lauren mansion. As to Dylan’s Candy Shop, I didn’t know it used to be across Bryant Park! It could have been a chi chi pop-up shop when you saw it.

  8. I’m glad I’m not the only one who isn’t that keen on Bond No. 9 😀 Personally, I think some of the niche brands are a bit over rated…

  9. I am not a fan of the line, indeed there isn’t a single perfume of theirs I could name that I love, and only a few I vaguely like. But that didn’t stop me enjoying your post for its references to jute rugs, tweed coats and the incomparable wig analogy. 😉

  10. I don`t see much substance to Bond No 9. They have some good fragrances but the majority I`ve smelled are either rip-offs of other best sellers or just plain horrendous. I just samples and reviewed Coney Island. I got the same sour musk that keeps lingering on. There is not a strong enough soap to take it off.
