WHAT I SMELL: Sideris opens with a deep warm breath of saffron, incense and myrrh. It smells like it’s from another world; like it’s been around for ages only to reveal itself again. Sideris sits in a haze. You feel that it’s there, but somehow it exists in aura around you rather than directly on you. Sideris takes its time to transform and when it does, it doesn’t do so in a dramatic fashion. Everything is seamless and it mixes so perfectly that you can easily miss the differences; but they’re there. After about 30 minutes, the light sweetness of the rose makes a rather subdued appearance in a manner that you barely notice. To me this is not “rose,” but a veil of earthen rose shrouded by incense. Sideris then becomes more creamy and yet woody which sounds contradictory, but trust me it’s not. As Sideris continues to progress, the incense from the early stages starts to subside, and the benzoin starts to become prominent and along with the rose and sandalwood, the fragrance becomes a bit sweeter. Sideris is a fragrance that I feel like I just can’t give enough justice to… It’s all too beautiful and sometimes words are just too hard to convey.
Notes from the Maria Candida Gentile website:
Top notes: Incense, Cysts, Corsican Myrrh, White Pepper, Saffron
Heart notes: Turkish Rose, Rose Ayrshire Splendens
Base notes: Sandalwood, Benzoin, Waxed Woods
WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME: Lady with a Fan by Spanish painter Diego Velázquez
THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE SIDERIS: dreamy, serious, classical
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT SIDERIS: Scent for Thought, Cafleurebon, The Non-Blonde
BOTTOM LINE: Sideris is unique and incredibly beautiful. I’ve only been introduced to two of Maria Candida Gentile’s fragrances thus far, Cinabre and this. I have the feeling I need to explore some more.

Well, I haven’t tried Sideris or Cinabre, but I did try Lady Day and Luberon both of which I loved. It was so hard to decide which one to buy first. I made the choice of Lady Day based on our weather and will definitely try Sideris when I go back to buy Luberon. Thanks for reviewing it.

Cymbaline – I have no idea how your comment got lost, but so sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have to give Lady Day more of a try, I just managed to get a little whiff the other day. Please note that Maria Candida Gentile has two new fragrances out now, Noir Tropical and Finisterre. I hope to have some reviews out on them soon!

No worries😊
Enjoyed your post on Sniffapalooza.
I was surprised that I liked Lady Day enough to purchase a bottle. White florals aren’t usually my thing, but this one smelled more of “greenery”, and that is definitely my thing! I sent for the complete sample set after reading your post and have enjoyed them all, but Exultat is in the lead. Looking forward to trying the new releases – especially Finisterre.

The full line huh? Wow. I love Exultat too, but it’s so closely related to Sideris so I thought I didn’t need a bottle of that too!

Dearest Hound
But you did give it very fine words..’ ‘creamy wood’ ‘dreamy, serious, classical’.
You’ve sold it to The Dandy.
Incense and roses are an easy sell though as far as I’m concerned.
Yours ever

Mr. Dandy…so glad to see you back in circulation! I’m so glad that I could make you think about opening your wallet. Maybe I need to change professions and get into sales! 🙂

I loved reading your review of Sideris. Earlier in the summer I was able to try several perfumes from this line at a local store and bought Lady Day – it went well with our beautiful sunny weather. It was really difficult to choose though, because I loved them all and will probably indulge in Luberon next just because lavender is one of my favorite notes. I’ll definitely retry Sideris and (unfortunately?) it’ll probably go the ‘must-have’ list.:/

Cymbaline – my must have list keeps growing (then shrinks because I invariably give in! Luberon sounds wonderful and I would like to give it a try too. Lavender is a comfort scent to me if done right. Although too much can be a bit boring. Let me know if you get a chance to test it out!

Even though I’ve never been attracted to this brand your description of Sideris makes me want to test it. It’s a definite lemming!

Heya Scented Hound,
I love the line but only have Exultat, Jin and I tried a couple of others but were so in love with Exultat that we stopped sniffing. Thanks for reminding me to go and try some more.

I just tried Exultat myself Portia. Sideris is a bit prettier, but in the end they are very similar.

Your reviews of this line really, really make me want to try it. I wish Surrender to Chance carried them, because I’m not one to order samples from Luckyscent for the most part. Still, I’m going to have to really hunt down Sideris, and possibly the cinnamon-rose-vanilla one that you reviewed a while back. Sideris sounds lovely!

Please do. They started selling her perfumes in 15ml sizes which is incredibly smart, but I don’t think they’re available yet in the US. I wish they would, that’s perfect!!!

Sideris is a masterpiece from the opening to the bottom. It is not very easy to wear and of course man can’t get unnoticed. To me it smells like old church full of flowers and incense, with ancient pew full of wood wax or polish….
My favorite from the line is Barry Lindon. I used the sample to the last drop and I’m seriously thinkink of buying some. The quality is superb and the price is normal.

I think Sideris is very easy to wear, at least in cool weather. I have a sample of Barry Lyndon and it’s not my favorite. I was expecting it to be a bit lighter than it is. As for the prices on these… very reasonable.

Good for you, I find it to heavy and reminds me a bit too much of church. So I’ll wear it on Christmas ;-).

You know, I always surprise myself because I really haven’t considered myself a big incense fan as well, but I have to say between this, Incense Oud by Kilian, and Maria Candida Gentiles Exultat…I think I am changing my mind. Although, if it is an incense perfume it must have some other notes that are predominant for me to like it…. if it’s all incense, no thank you (e.g. Tom Ford Sahara Noir).
