I’m the first to admit that I am a sucker for luxury; be it high count egyptian cotton sheets and sumptuous towels to high-end luxury vehicles. It’s amazing how elegant and finely tailored products can make you to purr like a kitten when you’re wrapped in their comfort. Puredistance M to me is one of those products.
WHAT I SMELL: M opens with a citrus blast that lasts for mere minutes. It’s a bit of a strange opening like that of a lemon sour cocktail. After a few more minutes you start to detect the cinnamon note. If I didn’t know it was cinnamon, I would say that it’s almost like cumin. This is when it really becomes interesting as M starts to turn up the spice. It’s exotic and mysterious and I keep expecting that at some point I’m going to be hit with a blast of something unknown. But M stays subdued and smooth as silk. True to its luxuriousness, it knows it’s an Aston Martin and not a Chevrolet. I love how M slowly builds. It’s in no hurry to develop and it takes a bit of time but eventually the leather comes forward in a smoky aura. As you know I’m not a big fan of leathers, but M’s leather is so ethereal. It’s like a thin layer at the bottom of the spice. Added to the layers of leather and spice is a slightly sweet patchouli with just a bit of oakmoss to give a dry powdery edge. M is not big on sillage, but hugs close to the skin. But I don’t care, it’s for me, not for anyone else.
From the Puredistance website:
Created in London by Roja Dove, M is a leather chypre of classic proportions… with an unexpected oriental twist. Sumptuous and complex, noble and sophisticated.
M Notes: Bergamot, Lemon, Rose, Jasmine, Cinnamon, Mosses, Cistus, Vetiver, Patchouli, Vanilla, Leather, Musk
WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME: Self-assurance. M is a fragrance for the man who doesn’t need to shout to the world that he has arrived. He never arrived. He was always there.
THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE M: sophisticated, confident, elegantly-understated
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE M: Kafkaesque, From Top to Bottom – Perfume Patter, Perfume-Smellin’ Things
BOTTOM LINE: M is a quiet treasure. Puredistance has created a fragrance that is elegantly understated for the man who likes the finer things in life. In addition to the beautiful scent, the packaging is exceptional as the 17.5ml cylinder comes in a silk lined box. How much more luxurious can you get than that?
Note to my readers, the wonderful Kafkaesque has teamed with Puredistance to offer samples of M and Opardu to 10 lucky readers of her blog. The draw ends on May 13th, so be sure to give her a visit.
- Bone Rating: 4.5 out of 5 possible bones
- Scent: Leather Chypre
- Nose: Roja Dove
- Classification: Unisex – but leans masculine
- Expense: $198 for 17.5ml or $330 for 60ml Perfume Extrait

OMG, you love it!! I was almost scared to read your review lest you hated it. Did I tell you, or did I tell you???!!!! I knew it. I just bloody well knew it!! I adore M so, so much. I hoard my little bottle like it were a holy relic. For me, M was much less a leather — though there was a phase of that too — and much more a molten, rich, amber at the end. I quite literally was having visions of hot lava, gushing red, gold, bronze and fiery orange. Such a spectacular scent and one of my absolute favorites.
I knew you’d love it. I just KNEW it! If only you could see the happy jig I’m doing around my desk right now. I’m THRILLED you adore one of my favorites!

Ooops, sorry, in the midst of my frenzied excitement, I forgot to thank you for the link love. Frankly, all I care about is that you adored “M.” Did I tell you or did I tell you??!!! I’m so bloody gleeful, you have no idea. LOL.

LOL… you are too funny. I love it. And you’re right it is very much like Hermes Bel Ami – although M is a quieter cousin. Smooches my dear!

I’d say it’s very good for women too. 🙂 I love it and if I had more (I only have a sample), I would definitely wear it (a lot probably). 🙂

I love the way you write your reviews- all the information is there! This sounds very interesting but I nearly fainted at the price. I’ll just have to resort to theft.

Did you dab it? I think when sprayed M has a big sillage, really, really big!
Lovely review, Steve, I imagine M suits you wonderfully!

Birgit – I did not dab, but I also did not do a heavy spray. I did find that my skin ate it up so maybe the combination didn’t send me off with a cloud hovering around me. To me this to me is a perfect scent for an elegant evening on the town or even an important business meeting. Thanks for stopping by.

I can totally relate to what you said in the opening statement. And I’m sure, Steve, this perfume suits you well.
M isn’t for me (I’m Antonia) but it smells just magical on my vSO (and it was from a dab vial – I wonder how it would smell sprayed).
Very elegant review.

Thanks U – I find that many fragrance don’t do a thing for me, but when they go on the hub I can’t resist them. Eau Savage is one of those fragrances.

Brie – always the dilemma of the perfumista. Trayee was one of those fragrances that I finally gave up my resistance to and I have never regretted it for a minute!

Lovely review! Not so lovely price. I suppose if it were true love it might be worth it. It would have to get a 6 bone rating. 🙂

Glad to hear you like this Houndy – as you know my experience was not so positive :’)
It develops in seconds on my skin and settles into a gross amber that bores me senseless. I wish I got what everyone else gets 😦 Loved your description though ❤

Dear Scented Hound, I unexpectedly came across Puredistance M through an unexplainable mistake. I somehow thought I had signed up for a split of Puredistance Opardu, but got this instead. It was one of my happiest mistakes. Great review!

I am trying this today and it is glorious! Your review is perfect. I too could have sworn I smelled cumin (along with cloves), but when I saw that it was cinnamon. Super duper seductive on a woman. If I win the next Powerball, Puredistance M for everybody! 🙂
