Montale White Aoud

WHITE-AOUD-300x300WHAT I SMELL:  There is something very disconcerting about the opening of a Montale fragrance.  I have noted many to be start off being  plastic and artificial like they were conceived from a test tube rather than through a perfumer’s nose and hands.  White Aoud is no exception; it covers your skin like a latex glove that has a slight powder inside that allows you to slip them on easily.  The saffron is evident as it tugs with the plastic which finally after a good while starts to give way to a pretty rose.  However, I would not call this a “rose” fragrance, it’s far more complex than that as the agarwood and cardamon mix and start to spice things up a bit.  But the journey does not to end there… what starts off as a latex glove turns finally into a lovely lightly powdered vanilla and patchouli floral beauty.  It’s very comforting and very pretty, but not so much so that it doesn’t also work for a man.

White Aoud Notes:  Rose of Damascus, saffron, agarwood, cardamom, jasmine, patchouli, sandalwood from Mysore, amber, vetiver, vanilla and labdanum.

tina turnerWHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME:  Tina Turner in Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome.  She’s a woman living in a world ruled by petroleum and White Auod feels like it’s derived from petroleum.  Even though it’s derived from petroleum, it’s the perfect solution from getting away from the grit and dirt.

THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE WHITE AOUD:  artificially pretty, soft, strong

  1. The notes sound amazing. Saffron…. mmmm. And saffron *combined* with the other things?! Wowzer. Four bones for a Montale…. this I have to try. The Tina Turner part just sealed the deal. 😀 A lovely, very intriguing, tempting review, Mr. Hound! I’m curious though, given your prior experiences with Montale, what led you to try this one? Was it those fabulous sounding notes?

    • S – I was in a local store and they carry the line. They said it was their #1 selling Montale and they were currently out of stock. So of course I had to spritz some on. Then when I ordered my Amouage Dia from Penny Lane Perfumes, they sent me a little decant. It is horrendous at first, but oh so pretty in the end. 🙂

  3. I am not sure Montale White Aoud is for me…. I have been challenged to try their Aouds by one of my readers. So we will see when I get there what it does or doesn’t do for me. BUT I loved the review. Now then I wonder what Tina would smell like, what she would wear while singing “Goldeneye”.

  4. I really like White Aoud. In me it’s the most fluffy and enveloping oud possible with great powdered vanilla, saffron and rose.

  6. I’d like to try this I think.
Oh, I was in Yankee Candle today and I thought of you. 😉 I know how much you love that place.

  7. I skip Montale every time at Esxence because they have such a big range that I don’t know yet and most unfrendly people to represent the brand. And I seem to have sensitive nose to musks. They don’t work for me.

  8. I don’t think Montale is “my brand” so combined with the fact that I don’t know a single store around to carry the line and I donot like their bottles, I’ll probably pass. But I enjoyed reading your review 🙂

    • LOL. Thanks. I have a small decant sitting next to me at my computer. I have to admit for the past week I have dabbed some on the back of my hand most every night. I’m with you on the bottles, they are just awful. Someone told me once that the reasons that they are in the can is to protect the juice from light absorption.

      • After I read Kathleen’s (No Disassemble Charlie No. 5): “Although my favorite part of the sniffing trip was her reaction to the Montale display. “What is, this…fancy Axe?” – I cannot shake that joke off every time I see Montale’s perfumes.

  9. I tried white aoud a while back, and while I liked it then, I can’t say it has the same effect on me now. It could be that they’ve fatigued me quite a bit with the number of releases they’ve had. Still, white aoud sounds promising in the dry down. And I have to admit, your Tina Turner analogy might have been the thing to pique my interests.

  10. That’s usually when I break down and buy a bottle too ;-). Some things just don’t quite get to me enough though. For instance, I’ve been nursing the same little sample of Tonka Imperiale by Guerlain for maybe three years now.

  12. Hello!
This is the second fragrance from Montale I have tried. Intense Cafe was my first purchase. It is a sample and I must say I really am enjoying this perfume thoroughly. It is comforting and very pretty, I agree! I love that photo of Tina Turner and your spot-on detailed review of this scent. I had not read anything about this fragrance before. I am pretty sure the sample came with my purchase from last year. It’s definitely not something I would reach for during a heatwave but I was really curious. A lovely White Aoud experience. Thanks again!😎

    • Thanks for the kind words Julie. Glad you love this. I have to admit that it sits on my shelf not getting the love that it should, but WA is a perfume that I really have to be in the right mood to wear. And when it’s the right mood, it’s absolutely perfect!
