The Scented Hound Turns 1 Year Old with a Birthday Draw!

birthday-dogA year ago this week, The Scented Hound was born.  What started as an interest has turned into a wonderful passion that has grown and blossomed in the last year.  I can still recall buying my first niche perfume, Carner D600 from Min NY in the fall of last year and then finding all the other wonderful blogs and sites that gave me inspiration to jump in.  I can clearly remember too, that a couple other bloggers started their sites at the same time and I’m happy to say that Katherine from Mad Perfumista and Freddie from Smellythoughts are still running strong aside me with wonderful insight and commentary on their love of fragrance.

I have learned a lot in the last year and would like to share with a few thoughts on this first year of my endeavor:

  • Blogging is fun, but it can be tough.  You go through spurts of creativity while at other times your creative juices just run dry.  I look back at some of my first posts and cringe at what I have written…and to be honest I still do that!  I wonder if other bloggers never feel satisfied with their posts?
  • It’s easy to write reviews on perfumes that you love.  The words just flow.  Actually the same can be said for those fragrances that you hate too.  I don’t like criticizing anybody’s creation…but again, it’s just my opinion.  But the love and hate posts seem to generate the most views!
  • You can’t keep up with all of the new launches.  This industry is constantly churning out new product and it’s impossible to keep up with it all.  So you have to search out those products which pique your interest and then continue searching out  established products that you want to sample and not worry about all of the new.
  • My wallet suffers from too much love.  I have spent so much money on perfume this year, but as my wonderful husband said, “don’t worry about spending on your passion, at least you’re not passionate about cars…now that would cost some money.”  Note to perfumers:  If you offered more 30ml and 50ml product, I would spend even more money.
  • I wish I had the mind of many of you out there.  I read and speak to people who can recall and compare and name off perfumes and ingredients and notes with detailed accuracy like people who can recall football game and player statistics.  That’s an art that I just don’t possess.
  • I have sooooo much to learn about fragrance, which I guess makes sense since this endeavor is only 1-year-old.  I consider myself a novice.
  • The best part of this whole experience is sharing and communicating with all the wonderful people in this community.  And without a doubt, this community is all about sharing and support…it truly is the number one thing that keeps me going with this blog.  Thank You!

ecoudrayambrevanillaAnd as a special thanks to you, my wonderful friends at Penny Lane Perfumes have offered as a draw, a 100ml bottle of E. Cordray Ambre et Vanille to one of my lucky readers.  Ambre et Vanille is a luscious vanilla wrapped up in amber which makes for a snuggly sweater for these cold winter nights.  The draw will be open until 11:59 pm Eastern Time, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 and is open to all US and non-US readers.  A winner will be drawn at random using random.org.  To enter in the draw, please check out  pennylaneperfumes.com and leave a comment on this post telling me what product from their stock you wished you owned or are curious about.  Or, if there is something in their stock that you already own and absolutely love, share that love in a comment.  Penny Lane Perfumes carries Amouage, Serge Lutens, Mona di Orio and many other wonderful brands.

But wait, there’s more (that sounds like an infomercial doesn’t it); for the first 50 people who make a purchase from their site, Penny Lane Perfumes will give you $25.00 off of your order.  All you have to do is put 2013 in the coupon box.  However, this offer is valid for US customers only as they currently do not ship overseas.  I am thinking that I may have to make a little purchase of Serge Luten’s Chergui myself!  I think my friends at Penny Lane Perfumes are pretty awesome, don’t you?!

In the end, thank you for all of your support.  I look forward the year ahead and the perfume experiences to come.  And since I’m a big boy now, I’m passing a bone to some new wonderful bloggers who are just starting out as pups, please check them out:  Kafkaesque, Scent Bound, The Other Scent.

  3. Happy Anniversary! What a wonderful way to reflect on a year! I think that most people who enjoy writing find that as time progresses, they get better. When I look back on my early posts, the photography! Eek! The writing! Eek eek! It takes a while to get your sea legs and find your voice, I think.

I don’t have a mind made for recall like that either. Sometimes, when pressed, I can only remember if I liked it or not! My resolution is trying to be more organized, which is maybe the key to better memory.

Again, happy anniversary! Here’s to many more!

  4. Happy anniversary! This is a fantastic blog and I look forward to reading many more of your reviews! I peeked at penny lane…wow! I may just be ordering myself a little bottle of l’artisan drole de rose with that discount.

  5. This is really a great blog (which I found through Kafkaesque), and I’m glad to have found out about it. I quite like your taste in scent as well (and I live in DC also! *waves*)! As for Penny Lane, well…I have to say I wouldn’t snub my nose at really any of their offerings! I wore a sample of Mona di Oro’s Cuir today, but perhaps the one I’m most curious about is Amouage Lyric for Men which I’ve heard so much about. I thought Jubilation XXV was great, and would love to explore Amouage a bit more!

    • Greetings Kevin…both you and Holly in DC… sounds like we need to start a Capital region perfume club! As for Amouage…I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them as they are top of the line beautiful. I haven’t tried Lyric myself, but know that I would love it as I’m a sucker for a rose fragrance! Good luck with the draw and thanks for stopping by!

  6. Happy Anniversary, Mr. Hound. I fell for your blog from the very first, wry, dry post I read — and then your funny “About” section sealed the deal. I leave each and every review, and your bright, insightful comments about things. I hope you have many, many more anniversaries to come. As for Penny Lane, I would like a bottle of Montale Aoud….. 😉 No, in all seriousness, I didn’t know they carried Amouage! That’s excellent to know and, if I ever decide to live on canned tuna for 2 months, I may order a bottle of Jubilation 25. LOL.

Thank you for the very kind link to my blog. Your kindness is as great as your sweetness and your wonderful sense of humour. xoxoxo

    • Er…. that would be *LOVE, not *leave. I think I got carried away with excitement at all the lovely things carried by Penny Lane. And your husband is right, it is cheaper than an obsession with cars. But it still ain’t cheap. LOL. Happy Anniversary again, sweetpea.

  9. Happy Blogoversary, S.! I wish you a lot of creativity in years to come.

Do not enter me into the draw but I want to say that I wish Penny Lane Perfumes would stock Keiko Mecheri Johana (not that I can’t buy it elsewhere but since I plan to buy it I wanted to buy it there: they were very nice to FB followers and sent some great samples).

    Once again – congratulations!

  10. Steve. Your perfume blogging is amazing and your reviews are very insightful.
Thanks to you I could read about fragrances I don’t know and decide if I wanted to sample them or not.
Have a fantastic blog celebration and I hope your site will continue on satisfying curious perfumistas minds with another reviews.

From Penny Lane offerings I would like to try anything from Patricia de Nicolai. I don’t know the brand much.

    Happy BLOGOVERSARY!!

  11. Happy birthday, Houndy! I’m sending you a big virtual birthday hug.
I’ve been so good for 10 whole days and now you go and wave a $25 off discount under my nose. Since I’ve only recently started trying the Serge Lutens line I’m tempted to use that on a full bottle of something. But you know me, I’m not afraid of the blind buy so I might do something totally crazy and wander off into Montale territory and try something from that line because I hear they have insane lasting power. Although Saffyishere mentioned the Heely Cardinal and that’s been on my list for a while. I do love me some incense.
I look forward to another year of reviews from you and thanks for mentioning some new blogs to check out.

    • Poodle – you and I are so much alike in many respects and I am with you on the blind buy. It’s like gambling for a non-gambler! I have tested the Heely Cardinal and it is reverent and the name implies and oh so wonderful. Good luck with the draw!

  12. Hey, happy blog birthday 🙂 I’m a recent arrival but have been enjoying your posts very much and, while it may not be relevant, the layout looks great on a mobile so I’ve really liked reading them that way.

As for the Penny Lane Perfumes…I’ve been meaning to try ‘Sel Marin’ by Heeley for ages. I love a good seaside scent and am developing a little collection of not so expensive suncreamy seasalty scents. If my ship ever comes in, maybe I’ll buy a bottle of this too 🙂

    • Hi Erin – good to know the blog looks good on mobile. I don’t think I’ve ever paid attention to it. As for Sel Marin…sounds perfect along with Penny Lane as they are located in Rehoboth Beach, DE, right off the boardwalk!!! Good luck with the draw and thanks for reading!

  14. I can tell from my experience, yes, I feel like my posts are sometimes, well, stupid. 🙂
And my wallet suffers a lot too. That’s just what happens when you fall in love with perfume.

Happy blog birthday and many more to come! 🙂

As for Penny Lane, I would love a bottle of any of Keiko Mecheri perfumes (Oliban comes first to mind). I’m very frustrated that Keiko perfumes aren’t available here.

  17. Happy Birthday Hound. I enjoy reading your blog,it is nice to hear new voices speaking about perfume. I also really enjoy Penny Lane Perfumes. They have a great selection of perfumes and it’s hard to choose just one that I am curious about. Though I did select just one, Seville a’L Aube by L’Artisan, I adore the scent of orange blossom and the back story on this fragrance.

  18. Happy 1st Birthday!!! I absolutely LOVE Penny Lane Perfumes! Was lucky enough to pay them a visit last summer and had the best time with Cassandra . I had never been interested in gourmands before but Cassandra introduced me to Chocolate Greedy and Aomassai, both of which went home with me! I am hoping to visit again this summer and I think Heeley Sel Marin will be going home with me this time.

    • Sounds like you had my experience after spending a day out in the sun, going into Penny Lane and just having a ball with Cassandra sniffing and exploring and having a great time. I can’t wait until this next summer and Sel Marin sounds like the perfect beach companion! Good luck Michele!

  19. Great blog..been sneakily reading for a few months without commenting.
On the penny lane site…the L’Artisan Cœur de Vétiver Sacré looks so tempting…love vetiver and other unusual scents….my current fave is Nasamotto Black Afghano…I get so many comments when I wear it.

    • Peter…I like sneaky 🙂 I haven’t tested Black Afghano but I have heard so many wonderful things about it. I did have a problem with Nasamotto Pardon which was such a scrubber for me that I have been shy to go back to the line. Best of luck with the draw!

  20. That’s awesome Houndy, congrats 😀 No need to enter me in the draw though! I’ll leave that for another lucky winner.
You’re blog is the only other one that I always read – to be honest, as bad as it sounds, I’m not really a reader… I write and that’s it :/ Not in a selfish way, but as you said, our writing started for exploring and learning and that’s all that mattered to me.
Your tastes have changed massively which has been fascinating, and it’s been lovely having you as a little companion on this side of the perfume world! Look forward to seeing what 2013 brings for you 😀 xxxx

  21. Congratulations on your one year anniversary, The Scented Hound! I enjoy your writing and I do think we have the same taste in perfumes that ended up with FB purchases — case in point, FM Portrait of a Lady and Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille…I may be forgetting something but there you have it! If you are ever in NYC and in the midtown area during a weekday, I would love to have coffee with you (given advanced notice as the job that allows me to indulge in perfumes also keep me chained to my desk…I do love the job).

As for Penny Lane perfumes, I have never tried any of the Montales and it would be wonderful if they can do a sample program. Also…a suggestion for improving the site is to provide the ability to search by brand AND also a View All function (yeah, I am quite lazy and can get cranky if I have to keep clicking NEXT).

  22. Happy Blogging Birthday! It’s quite a travel don’t you think? I’m happy for you and certainly believe you’ll do great in the future.
Well I’ve actually don’t buy from American sites unless I get someone to pick me up the stuff right there. For buying perfume from America I have to pay customs and taxes, even for samples, so it is not money wise :-(. I already spend too much money on perfume ;-P. But as I’ve checked Penny Lane’s website, it is easier to choose what not to like than other way around.

    • I hear you on wanting to much. I really haven’t purchased overseas except once and it didn’t seem to be a problem with customs and taxes, but I know that each country is very different. Thanks for sticking by me C!

  23. Congrats on the one year anniversary! Hopefully my blog In The Nose will still be here in one year! You seem like a pro already. You are right about writing about fragrances you love, the words seem to flow; on contrast, finding words to describe fragrances that you absolutely despise is liken to juicing a beet. LOL I have a couple perfumes in that unfortunate category and I’m trying to piece together the reviews and it is difficult. What can you do, somebody’s got to do it, it might as well be me right? LOL I checked Penny Lane’s website and there are some interesting scents there, but my mind is made up; I want Lyric Man by Amouage. It is perfection in a bottle and is absolutely fantastic. Only problem is it’s way out of my price range.

  24. Congrats on your one year anniversary. I also have spent much money on perfume this past year. Its an addiction, but through it I have met many wonderful perfumistas along the way and don’t regret my perfume habit at all. I browse Penny Lane Perfumes website frequently and recently acquired a long overdue purchase Montale White Aoud. I currently have my eyes on the E Coudray Nohiba, I had opportunity to try a sample some time back and the wish to purchase this one keeps popping back in my head…..maybe its time to act on it! Thank you for the fabulous draw!
