WHAT I SMELL: Orange Star goes on sharp. It’s orange, but not a juicy kind of succulent orange, but more of an orange that was dunked in floor cleaner or some other kind of petroleum product. I can’t say that it’s sweet, nor can I say that it’s sour. It’s just very artificial. Some of the sharpness disappears in the dry down but then the patchouli comes out. I never was a fan of patchouli oil, but have found that in the right compositions it can really be lovely. In this case, it’s very “hippy” patchouli. This is a strong scent with a mind of its own. I see this as a scent that would be favored by girls aged 15 to 20.

WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE TO ME: For some odd reason this to me smells like 1970. There is a real artificiality about Orange Star. And for those of who can remember 1970, our environment was made up of Naugahyde couches, mounds of Tupperware and just a ton of things made out of plastic. It was not an era for natural products. Orange Star reminds of old beauty parlors and old grocery stores where clerks actually rung up items that had price stickers on them. I have to say that I have not experienced a scent that sends me back to another time like this one does. Now, I have good memories from childhood and those images cited above aren’t bad things, but they’re not something that I want to smell like. Not in the least.

I haven’t tried this one yet but I liked your review: it’s very different from anything I read before. A year ago I’d have probably doubted your description but after I smelled Pentachords… I still think AT is a talented perfumer but those minimalistic experiments left me more than cold – annoyed (you see, I paid for those samples 😉 ).

Thanks Undina…and Happy 4th of July! This one was really a huge no for me. I really believe that this scent probably works for someone under 30. I read once where kids can consume massive amounts of sugar because their taste buds are geared for sugar. In other words, the sweets don’t seem so sweet to them. And as adults our taste buds won’t put up with such sweetness (think Pixy Stixs). My guess is that as we grow older the same things happen to our sense of smell and what we would deem as harsh as an adult, when we’re younger we find it appealing. In any case, more power to those who love it, but to me it’s scrubbable. As for the Pentachords, I have not tested any of the 3 and it sounds like I probably shouldn’t hurry to do so.

OH MY GOD!
Hahahaha. Orange Star is easily in my top 3 of all time. I adore it so so much.
The artificial notes your probably smell are the huge sparkling aldehydes up top.
The opening literally makes my mouth water – super juicy, dripping orange syrup – slightly soapy in the middle – incense and patchouli Tauer signature throughout – it’s a masterpiece IMO, and the best citrus fruit fragrance there is.
I’m so upset to hear you didn’t enjoy it 😦

My dear Freddie, you are the reason that I opted to sample Orange Star. Funny how we can have such differing opinions about the same scent. I found this to be scrubbable. And this was the 2nd time I tried it. I wanted to be fair to my review, so I gave it 2nd shot and I got the same reaction. I’m glad that you love it…me not liking it will just mean that there’s more for you 🙂 xoxoxox Steve

Well, I’m glad you gave it a shot – more for meee haha – it’s pathetic how I don’t own a bottle yet but own two other Tauers yet this is my number 1. I really can’t think of a fragrance that tops it for me. It is mad how opinions differ hahaha.

Maybe you can layer the scents; combine Orange Star and Commando and you’ll smell like a creamsicle jock strap :). That’s what’s fun about you, you really like the far out scents! Me, I guess I like smelling like a grandmother. :|~

I love your new reviewing style. It works really well. I don’t have too many experiences with Tauer, but I’ve got some samples of their stuff coming soon. I think Orange Star might even be in that order and I’m very excited to get it now! 😀

Steve I agree with you about that artificiality, but me I like it. It’s extravagant and cheery.But You’re spot on with your impressions. At first I couldn’t understand where was that ripe, realistic ,natural orange that everybody else was talking about.

Ana, from everything else that I have read on Orange Star, I do believe it’s a love or it or hate it fragrance. I love really juicy natural citrus scents, but this just doesn’t fit into that category. I know however, that you’re not the only one that loves Orange Star and that is awesome. It seems all of our noses respond differently to scents and I love to see all the different reactions! Thanks for stopping by! Steve

I’m pretty much a Tauer newbie myself. So far I am zero for 2 as I didn’t much care for L’Air du Desert Marocain as well. I still am thinking positive as others rave about this line. As for the 70s, in looking at your profile, it looks like you didn’t have to live through the era.
